Debloat the Philips 75PUS8505

Android TV 12 · 19 apps on the list · tested on a real set

This 75 inch Philips set from 2020 runs Android TV 12 and ships with TP Vision telemetry, Philips content promos and an app gallery, a retail demo and Google first-setup leftovers. The list also covers voice assistants and Play-Fi speaker apps this owner does not use.

Every entry was checked on this TV before it went on the list. The set has little memory, and its home screen can be replaced by a lighter one. TidyTV turns these off from your phone over Wi-Fi, saves a backup first and never deletes anything.

Apps TidyTV can turn off on the Philips 75PUS8505

Grouped as the tested list groups them. In the app each one has a switch, so you choose. Apps marked your call are extras the list leaves on.

TP Vision telemetry 3

org.droidtv.gel runs inside the candeebug process. 17 TV components bind candeebug's CollectionService (channels, playtv, settings, tptvservice, tvpowermanagerservice, usbbreakin and others); none of them retried after it was disabled. Idle log unchanged, except that the storage monitor's 10-minute pass now logs "TvStorageCULLogger: Binder NOT available" once per channel source instead of handing the counts over.

  • "UsageLogger": remote keypress loggingorg.droidtv.usagelogger

Philips content promos and the app gallery 4

Nothing persistent binds these; nettvrecommender is only a client of epgdata, not the other way round. Idle log unchanged afterwards.

Retail demo 2

Both run under org.droidtv.eum.* process names (eum.sticker, eum.demome) but are separate packages: org.droidtv.eum itself keeps running and must stay (see below). The persistent tptvservice storage monitor asks demome for the size of its clips every 30 s, and did so before too; with demome disabled it logs "iDemo null" at the same 30 s pace instead and its 10-minute pass still completes. The demo clips (~410 MB) stay on disk, disabling does not delete them.

Google telemetry and first-setup leftovers 4

None was running, so no memory is freed; they just stop starting. Nothing binds them. Idle log unchanged.

Voice assistants this owner does not use 2

Chromecast (com.google.android.apps.mediashell) is kept: katniss only binds into it as a client, mediashell kept running with the same PID afterwards, and casting from YouTube and a Chrome tab still worked. The default keyboard is Gboard, so typing is unaffected. Idle log unchanged. Disabling katniss makes Android clear secure voice_interaction_service and assistant to "", and restore.sh does not put them back; after a restore, either pick the Assistant again in Settings or settings put secure voice_interaction_service com.google.android.katniss/.search.serviceapi.KatnissVoiceInteractionService settings put secure assistant com.google.android.katniss/.search.serviceapi.KatnissVoiceInteractionService

DTS Play-Fi, wireless multi-room speakers 1

It holds MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS and may capture audio playback, but nothing in the system binds it and dumpsys audio was identical before and after: output stayed on HDMI ARC (mMainType=0x8) to a soundbar, and sound and remote volume were checked by ear afterwards. Keep both if you own Play-Fi speakers. The app itself does not stay disabled: after the next reboot it was back at enabled=1, with "AudioOutService: PlayFi Enabled" logged during boot, as examples/philips-tpm191e and examples/philips-55oled707 also found. So it is commented out; the soft AP stayed disabled.

Preinstalled streaming apps this owner does not use 2

Both are system apps (factory copies in /system/product/app) with a Play Store update in /data, so Settings only offers "uninstall updates" and "disable"; disabling is enough, /data had 2.8 GB free.

ORDER MATTERS, as on examples/philips-50pus8517: disable the launcher FIRST, it holds a provider reference into tvrecommendations. After disabling tvlauncher, run set-home-activity again (Android drops the preference when the set of HOME apps changes); Home then resolved to com.gathin.tvhome, and both an injected KEYCODE_HOME and the remote's Home key landed there. tvrecommendations also owns the system notification panel, which is gone device-wide afterwards.

What always stays on

Good to know on this model

How to do it

  1. Turn on developer options On the TV, open Settings › System › About and select the build number 7 times. Then turn on USB debugging, and Network debugging if you see it.
  2. Tap your TV in TidyTV Your phone finds the TV on the Wi-Fi. Tick "Always allow" and press Allow when the TV asks.
  3. Review, then tidy TidyTV saves a backup, shows these apps with switches, and turns off the ones you pick, checking each one.

Questions

Will the Sources button still work?

Yes. The service behind the Sources drawer is kept, because the drawer stops working without it.

Do I need to keep Play-Fi apps?

The list switches off one Play-Fi part, the speaker setup helper. If you use DTS Play-Fi wireless speakers, switch it back on in the app.

Can I get the old home screen back?

Yes. Restore everything turns every app back on and puts the old home screen back in one tap.
